Bill and Herman,

I think you are both concerned about the caegories listed in the dimension "Role".
I agree that these are not ideal and would be happy to change them if we can come up with a better set.

The current set is:

1. Data Generator
2. Data Manager
3. Data Technologist
4. Data User
5. Data Policy maker
6. Other

Bill gives the following examples:

1. legal and policy;
2. databases and information integration;
3. learning,
4. natural language processing and information extraction;
5. information retrieval and web information access; and
6. knowledge discovery in social and information networks,
7. etc

All these are good topics but they are much finer grained and we cannot have too many categories.
Somewhere between 3 and 6 is probably ideal. So we have to be rather more course grained.
Bill, would you like to suggest a coarser grouping which coveres the technical expetese TAB needs?

I think we also need some members of TAB who are data users rather than data technologists. Do you agree?

Herman points out that the categories do not reflect the people that are cureny involved in RDA.
Maybe that is a reason to try to get represention on TAB from those areas that are currently underrepresented in the RDA membership.
In order to attract members from those areas? Should TAB reflect the actual mebership or the desired membership?

(Incidentally I noticed that the words maximum and minimum are the wrong way around in the three tables in this section.

This is update on the process for agreeing the process.

The process for moving forward with the TAB elctions was discussed at the RDA Organisiong Group today. There is a urgent need to get a TAB established as soon as possible.

The organising group thought that the process described in the current version of the document was workable for the intial selection of TAB and would like to move forward as soon as possible. The process can always be refined for future elections if necesary.

The suggestion is that we proceed as follows:

1. The document is "announced" to the rda-all list very soon and members are invited to comment on the forum during one week.

2. The process document is revised to accomodate sugestions raised and assuming that this discussion does not throw up any major issues of principle the process is then enacted. (Council will judge whether sufficient consensus has been reached.)

3. Council nominate the first 6 interim members of TAB as described in the document: "These TAB members are chosen in order to provide a breadth of expertise which forms a basis for the balances which need to be established."

4. Elections are then held for the first 6 full members as decribed in the document:"Any member can put themselves forward as a candidate for election to the TAB. To do this they canvass for 3 seconders and put themselves forward by putting their “statement” on the forum by a specific date...".

(Note there is some work to do to set this technolgy up for this. For example to choose nad configure an appropriate on-line voting system)

Does this seem OK to everyone?
