The initial slides for a proposed Preservation e-Infrastructure working group are available at https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6959356/RDA/Outline%20for%20RDA%20Preservation%20Working%20Group.pdf - further details to follow.

Dear David, dear All,

Thanks a lot for the initial case statement.
Just a few thoughts concerning the document and the focus of the WG:

1) Preservation
I think it is necessary to define very carefully the term preservation (-> WG Data Foundation and Terminology) .
It should become clear if we focus more on bitstream preservation or preservation in general, e.g. including content preservation. IMO bit(stream) preservation could be challenging sufficiently ;-)

2) Common APIs and services
Identifying or defining a minimum set of common functionalities which should be fulfilled by preservation APIs and services might be an important step to interoperability and standardization. I am not sure if OAIS provides such a set or a common API.

3) Preservation metrics
Metrics quantify the quality of a preservation service. The identification and collection of significant metrics and their corresponding measuring methods might be important to negotiate SLAs between clients and the service (preservation) providers.

1) I think it has to be more than bit preservation - that is why the OAIS definition is brought in, to clarify that point.
2) The OAIS Information Model has some basic ideas in but clearly you are right - a lot more detail is needed.
3) Yes - evidence must be addressed and is an important issue for early discussion. There are various possibilities so the text in the case statement is pretty generic. Did you have some specific text in mind?

Preparation for March meeting in Gothenburg

Postby dgiaretta » Mon Mar 11, 2013 9:03 pm

I suggest that we put information about use cases and services on the forum, in preparation for the meeting.

As a start I can point to a recent document from the APARSEN project on preservation services:
http://www.alliancepermanentaccess.org/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2013/03/APARSEN-REP-D21_1-01-1_0.pdf

The SCIDIP-ES project produced a User Requirements doc – see http://www.scidip-es.eu/assets/Deliverables/SCIDIP-ES-DEL-WP12-D12-1.pdf
plus a video overview at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVEbZJ-VlAk&feature=player_embedded

Another useful doc may be one on test environments and tools at http://www.alliancepermanentaccess.org/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2013/03/APARSEN-REP-D14_1-01-1_3.pdf
